Chuck McElwee, Steve Douglas and J.D. Rector of Manan Hearing presented an educational Kick-Off program at Miller’s Senior Living Community of Plymouth on Friday afternoon April 12th. The program included musical entertainment, refreshments and prizes as well as important information on hearing and hearing loss.
Hearing Instrument Specialist Steve Douglas opened the program with a selection of well-known soft rock songs. Accompanying himself on guitar, Douglas sang hits of various artists including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens and James Taylor. Douglas admitted he wouldn’t be able to share his musical talents if it weren’t for the hearing aids he has worn for the past 24 years.
“My hearing loss involves high-frequency sounds,” shared Douglas. “I wouldn’t be able to sing and play for you today if I didn’t wear my hearing aids!”
Douglas then turned the program over to Chuck McElwee who is also a Hearing Instrument Specialist. McElwee spoke about hearing, hearing loss and the effect that hearing loss can have on our cognitive abilities. Using a power point presentation McElwee gave a brief summary of how the inner ear works and things that lead to hearing loss. He then discussed how hearing loss affects different aspects of a person’s life as well as the importance of yearly hearing check-ups. The presentation was very interactive with the audience and Jean Schricker and Barbara Donnelly each received prizes for answering questions.
Douglas closed the program with several more songs including a song titled “Young Again” which was penned by the late Gladys Umbaugh who was a Miller’s resident. Douglas wrote the music for the song.
McElwee and Douglass reminded those present that Manan Hearing Clinic is held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m. to meet the hearing needs of the community. The hearing clinics are free of charge and open to the public. For those wishing more information about the free clinics call 574-936-9801 and ask for Anna Corbett or Cindy Flagg.
