I want to congratulate the staff of Miller’s Merry Manor in both Mooresville & Columbia city.  Recently, both of these locations accomplished something that many nursing homes will never experience – a deficiency-free annual survey from the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH).  We’re proud to work with dedicated employees like these who are passionate about people and enthusiastic about doing their jobs well.  Congratulations and keep up the good work!

Now that we’ve started the New Year, it’s good to take a look back to see the positive things that have happened over the past year. Continuing Education has been one of our top priorities.  We are finishing up the last few facilities with our electronic medical record implementation, and are in the process of rolling out our online inservice program in all of our buildings for continuing our employees’ on-the-job inservice training. In addition, 30 of our LPNs are working to get their RN degree from Ball State University.  This education is being funded by Ball State, Miller’s employee education funds and a TAG grant from the State of Indiana. 

Over the past year, we have also welcomed nearly 400 new employees as we added four groups to the MHS work family.  We started 2007 by adding the employees from Autumnwood of Tipton Hospital. As the ESOP was formed this fall, the therapists and staff from Theracare became part of Miller’s Health Systems.  Finally, in December, we were joined by the employees from the former Bradner Village in Marion.  Now, we’ve started 2008 with the addition of the employees from Autumnwood Village Assisted Living Community in Tipton.  We want to welcome all of these employees, and we’re excited about the opportunities for growing our company. One thing we’ve been reminded of is that we’re blessed to work with people who want to make a difference in the lives of the people they serve.  Each facility has employees who go above and beyond their day to day responsibilities to try to make sure our residents’ requests are met. We work with some extremely dedicated and talented employees and for that we are very thankful.  We were very blessed in 2007 and we look forward to a great 2008!

Management Changes Take Shape for Bradner Village Healthcare
On December 1^st, Miller’s Health Systems, Inc, began a 15-year lease of Bradner Village Healthcare Center from Mainstreet Capital Partners. Mainstreet, a company with ties to Marion, purchased Bradner Village from the current owner Eric Walts, also effective December 1^st. “We’re proud to become a part of the Marion community,” stated Patrick Boyle, President and CEO of Miller’s Health Systems. “We’re a 100% employee-owned company, and after a year of employment with us, the eligible employees from Bradner Village will also become beneficial owners of Miller’s Health Systems. We believe this is a great opportunity for all involved. We look forward to getting to know the medical community in Marion and introducing them to our company.”
As part of the transition, the current Bradner Village Healthcare facility will be renamed Miller’s Merry Manor, making it one of thirty-two healthcare and rehabilitation facilities and eleven assisted living communities operated by Miller’s Health Systems. After 43 years of serving communities throughout Indiana, Miller’s is regarded by the health care community as a leader in the senior rehabilitation and healthcare industry. Select locations offer private Medicare Rehabilitation Suites, and specialized technology including Accelerated Care Plus modalities (ACP) along with their new Omnicycle. This therapy lineup is used to treat orthopedic, cardiovascular and neurological conditions, as well as wound care, pain management and other medical issues. Premier Dining is an additional service unique to Miller’s Merry Manor offering expanded daily menu choices, optional dining times and open seating. Various locations may also offer outpatient rehabilitation, specialty care for Alzheimer’s disease, Hospice care, and Adult Day Care services.
As part of the management transition, Boyle announced the appointment of John Velasquez to the position of Administrator. During his tenure with Miller’s Health Systems, Velasquez has served in capacities around the State, with latest assignments including Administrator at the Hobart and Hartford City locations. Velasquez is originally from the Marion area and is a graduate of Ball State University where he recently completed a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences and Gerontology. He mentors undergraduate students at Ball State University as a Chapter Advisor for Phi Delta Theta, and enjoys a variety of the martial arts. Velasquez, his wife and 2 children live in Hartford City.

September 14^th, 2007 was a historic day for our company.  On that day, the papers were signed finalizing our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (“ESOP”) and giving us the chance to be Employee-Owners.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our employees, and it marks the beginning of a new phase in our company’s history.  No matter if an employee has been a part of this company for one year or 30, each one has the opportunity to make an impact on those we care for and work with. It will take teamwork and excellent stewardship to take our company to the next level, but I am confident that we’re well on our way!
 
We are now beginning the education process, not just teaching employees about the details of the ESOP, but also more about our business.  We want to make sure the heart of what we do is always based on our Core Values: Passion, Integrity, Growth, Stewardship and the ability to Adapt.  If we keep these principles foremost, we will be a very blessed company.   We will continue to look for ways to manage what we have carefully, to be efficient, and work to deliver an excellent product.  We will be driven to expand our services to other providers throughout the Midwest so that we can fulfill our goal of growth.
